Helgoland | The Red Keep

After the Germans exchanged Helgoland with the British against Zanzibar in 1890, they turned it into a fortress island with a 13 km subterranean tunnel system. On May 11th 1945, Helgoland came back under the control of British troops and soon became a bombing range. On April 18th 1947, the Royal Navy detonated 6,700 tonnes of explosives during operation “Big Bang” creating one of the biggest single non-nuclear detonations in history.

Voormalige eilanden in Nederland | Schouwen

“Eilanden hebben iets speciaals. Ze zijn omringd door water. Vanwege het isolement is de sfeer er anders. Bij storm kun je niet weg en anderen kunnen jou niet 1-2-3 bereiken. Een ongerept stukje land midden in het water met een prachtige natuur. Dat biedt volop kansen voor het maken van mooie wandelingen.” Ik kan het niet beter verwoorden dan de auteur van de wandelgids ‘De mooiste eilandwandelingen van Nederland’.

Elba | Where the mountains rock

The Tuscan island of Elba has many faces. Of course, there are the beautiful beaches, but when you head inland for its mountainous interior, you’ll be rewarded with splendid hikes. And that’s just what I did.

Ascension’s Green Mountain | From lookout to ecological experiment

Biological clean slate When there is one island in the middle of the tropical South Atlantic, with the nearest island 700 miles away, and the nearest mainland 900 miles away, it is inevitable that everything about the place is unique. When Ascension Island first rose from the sea, it was devoid of life, a biological clean slate. Indeed, from that first day, every living thing on the island had to fly, swim, drift, get blown or be carried here.

German Wadden Islands | Spiekeroog

Spiekeroog is one of the East Frisian Islands, also known as the Wadden Islands, off the North Sea coast of Germany. The only village on the car-free and greenest (!) of all Frisian islands is also called Spiekeroog. The island is part of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. Today tourists mainly flock to the 15 kilometres of sandy beaches.

Corfu | capital Kerkyra & mountain village Pelekas

I set out to walk the Corfu Trail but an inflamed hip joint kept me from doing so. Luckily I reserved a couple of days in Corfu Town (also known as Kerkyra) before starting the – interrupted – journey. And glad I did! I visited the major highlights in the town’s surroundings and in Kerkyra itself.

Taiwan | Fo Guang Shan, the largest Buddhist monastery

I slept one night in Fo Guang Shan monastery. In the evening I took part in a ceremony of chanting monks and the next day I joined a grand tour of the premises and practiced calligraphy. Later that day I paid a visit to the imposing Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum.
