The Belgian independent and London-based filmmaker Dieter Deswarte has been working on a documentary called ‘Saints’. The film is set on the South Atlantic island of Saint-Helena where I conducted my own photo and research project ‘Splendid Isolation’ in 2014. Dieter chose my photo of the ‘weather man’ to illustrate his film poster.
Saint-Helena, one of the most remote islands in the world, is about to lose its isolation due to the arrival of an international airport. Over the course of three years Dieter follows a few islanders, who call themselves Saints, as they’re trying to cope with the changes that are coming their way.
‘Saints’ is a film about a small place becoming part of a bigger world; a coming of age story about a small community growing up in a globalised world. A tale about the longing for an island, a place of hope and the understanding that such a place might perhaps only exists for the ones who see them from the sea.
‘Saints’ will be screened for the first time at the Open City Documentary Festival in London on June 25th, 2016.
