Sicily – Egadi Islands | Favignana & Levanzo

Favignana

I already introduced you to my favourite Egadi Island: Maréttimo. Now I present you the two other Egadi Islands: Favignana and Levanzo.

Favignana is a low-lying island, making it perfect cycling terrain. And that’s just what I did. The island is small enough to circumnavigate it in just one day.

You will not be alone. Favignana is by far the most visited and popular of the Egadi Island. And for good reason, the island has some killer beaches. They come in two types: the classic sandy beach and then you have the amazing tuffa quarries scattered around the coastline.

Remarkable tuffa quarries

These quarries are the most remarkable feature of the island. Some – such as the one which can be visited on the north-eastern coast are caverns with vast, cathedral-like interiors. Others consist simply of pits where short-term cottage industry has eaten away the surface of the island – in some places the road and a house are left standing alone with the land around them all dug away to a depth of several metres. Some of these subterranean spaces are now cultivated and used for gardens or allotments; with their stone columns and stairways these are truly bizarre and memorable sights. One such garden, Villa Margherita, is open to the public, and can be toured by appointment.

Levanzo

Forget about the Cave of Altamira or Lascaux, head for La Grotta del Genovese. The graffiti in the cave dates back to 11-12 thousand years ago, to the final phase of Palaeolithic. That was just before the sea had swallowed those parts of land that linked the Egadi islands to Sicily. The paintings date back to 5-6 thousand years ago, to the end of Neolithic, when Levanzo was already an island. There’s little else to do on the island but walking and strolling. Footpaths cross Levanzo’s high plateau and hills as far as the lighthouse on the island’s northern tip. As the island is small, none of the walks are particularly long or demanding.

Levanzo is a tiny place and there’s not much in the way of shops and amenities. When there aren’t tourists around, Levanzo can feel amazingly remote. Your ideal get-away from Favignana or day trip from Maréttimo.
